What is the environmental issue that you find most pressing for your country and/or for the world? What do you think can be done to help resolve this issue? What kinds of things are being done?

"What is the environmental issue that you find most pressing for your country and/or for the world?  What do you think can be done to help resolve this issue?  What kinds of things are being done?"

The ongoing controversial environment issue in my country is the hydro power project of the Mekong River. Giving away the country's river for a new fancy dam is going to make a drastic change to the wildlife in the Mekong River. For example, The Irrawaddy dolphin is going to be extinct because of they have to find their own places to lay the eggs and moving the habitats for the other season. the problem is the fish and the dolphin can't swim through the dam. Undoubtedly, this situation will destroy the animal habitats and the fish. Due to the fact that Laos is still a young nation in its primary development stages, it will need a lot of potential economic development to grow as a country. For this reason, The young nation like Laos has to prosper the economy by making use of the natural resources.  With the join-venture between China and Laos, the country itself decides to build a dam and make a fortune with its hub of electricity. Apparently, there are approximately six dams belongs to China and one or two in neighboring countries. I can't imagine how annihilation it will cause for the wildlife and biodiversity of the Mekong region. However, the hydro power project is still moving on and seems to accomplish in few more years. Nothing can be done to help protecting the fish because the big dollars they can get from this project is their desires. The contract has signed already and the MRC(Mekong River Commission)  agreed with the government's aim because it's not the wrongdoing at all to build the dam base on its policy.
The only thing I can tell is that if you invade the nature and its cycle, you destroy the whole biodiversity.
However, the government can use the benefit of this develop the country's infrastructure no matter we have to let the Chinese use the dam first and wait for several years to possess the fancy hydro power project.

  2. Paow, Thank you for sharing your views about the development of hydro power in your country. The video was very interesting (although, I have to admit I have not finished watching all of it!) How do you think the majority of people in your country feel about these developments along the Mekong?

  3. Paow I' m sorry about this problem especially for the extinction of the dolphins :((
I hope, like Zishi, one day your country cab be able to face this problem with China's help, now you can't do more because your country is still weak( on the point of view of funding )
    Good luck!!!

  5. @Zishi: This issue is quite complicate for me. I may not perceive the right things or what but yea, the video can tell what the fact is. No hard feelings Alright China? hahahha Wish our country can take a glance at it soon.

@Linda: That's okay you can skip to the end :) The majority of Lao people might like it and hate it at the same time. But for individuals who care about the environment e.g, the professor in Environment major or the green organization, they are assertively disagree with this.

@ Teresa: Hopefully, they can figure out how to fix it. Thank you
